The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test taken by non-native speakers of English seeking to study at university in the United States. The exam tests students’ proficiency in academic English and consists of four integrated sections – reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Colleges and universities in the United States almost universally accept the TOEFL as a marker of English-language competency because it is administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), the same company that administers tests like the GRE and the SAT. The TOEFL is an entirely Internet-based exam; there is no ‘paper option’.
Jack R. Merchant, Ph.D., a Fulbright scholar with over 10 years experience in test prep, teaches all TOEFL students. Our courses teach students how to meet the challenges of the TOEFL with confidence. We build on the reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills students already possess in ways specifically designed to improve their test scores. Students develop their active reading skills by learning how to decipher the main idea, purpose, tone, and structure of reading passages. Listening passages are taken apart and explained so that students know what to listen for. Students are taught how to organize their essays and explain their thoughts with fluency and precision. They are also given ample practice for the speaking portion of the exam through one-on-one dialogue with Dr. Merchant in our interactive classroom. At Think, we provide students with tools and techniques that will improve their performance on each section of the TOEFL.
